“THE MOBILE SCHOOL” TRAVELS TO “ONIROUPOLI” OF DRAMA

For more than a month, the three-year project “The Mobile School Travels” implemented by the Ladies’ Union of Drama – House of Open Hospitality (HOH) will be in the “Oniroupoli” of Drama 2023-2024 with its own stand.
Together, the institution’s project team with the help of volunteers and friends will support this great effort with the ultimate goal of approaching Roma children from every corner of Greece. At the same time, children and adults will receive informative material about the project, while children will be able to play with most of the three hundred and fifty panels that the mobile school owns. At the stand there will also be held painting activities for all children. In addition, there will be actions by the Food Bank of Drama, in the form of board games, with the aim of raising awareness about food waste and giving back to fellow human beings.
After three years of interventions only within Drama, the Mobile School from 2020 until today is taking place three times a week in areas of Drama, Kavala and Xanthi, in order to approach Roma children who either for social or family reasons are excluded from the school communities and cannot have a regular education. The project received a new nine-month extension until April 2024 starting in August 2023. One of the goals is to convince more Roma children in the Philippou camp to go to school and continue their education. For this reason, the project team carries out a “Social Tutoring” in the settlement of Philippou three times a week, helping the children to meet the demands of school lessons.
The project “The Mobile School Travels” is implemented within the framework of the Active citizensfund program, with the implementing body of the Ladies’ Union of Drama – House of Open Hospitality (HOH). The Active citizens fund program, amounting to €15 million, is financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and is part of the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area (EEA) for the period 2014 – 2021, known as EEA Grants. The program aims to strengthen and optimize the sustainability of civil society, as well to highlight its role in promoting democratic processes, strengthening citizens’ participation in society and defending human rights. The management of the grant of the Active citizens fund program for Greece has been undertaken jointly by the Bodosaki Foundation and the Solidarity Now. Read more here: www.activecitizensfund.gr
