AT AN INTERVENTION TO ROMA CHILDREN OF KALABAKI “MOBILE SCHOOL TRAVELS” HONORED THE INTERNATIONAL GREEK LANGUAGE DAY

The team of the project “The Mobile School Travels” honored the International Greek Language Day through a series of parallel activities focusing on the Greek language, together with the Roma children in Kalabaki, Drama.

 

On Wednesday, February 9th, the Roma children of the village had the opportunity to enrich their knowledge on the history and richness of the Greek language and its contribution to the development of European and world culture, but also to have fun with word games, storytelling and grammar and syntax exercises.

 

The International Greek Language Day was celebrated for the first time in Naples, Italy, on May 20th, 2016, at the initiative of the Federation of Greek Communities and Fraternities of Italy. Following a proposal by the Special Committee of Hellenism of the Diaspora, its celebration was set to February 9th, a day commemorating the anniversary of the death of our national poet, Dionysios Solomos.

After three years of interventions only within Drama, the Mobile School, from 2020 until today travels three times a week to areas of Drama, Kavala and Xanthi, in order to reach Roma children who are excluded for either social or family reasons from school communities and cannot have regular attendance.

The project “The Mobile School Travels” is implemented within the framework of the Active citizens fund program, with the implementing body the Ladies Union of Drama – H.O.H The Active citizens fund program, amounting to € 12 million, is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) funding mechanism for the period 2014 – 2021, known as EEA Grants. The program aims to strengthen and enhance the sustainability of civil society and to highlight its role in promoting democratic processes, enhancing citizen participation in the community and defending human rights. The management of the Active citizens fund program in Greece has been jointly undertaken by the Bodosakis Foundation and SolidarityNow.
